NEW YORK (AP) The city of New York will begin replacing the metal roof of its main building in Brooklyn with cheaper, more environmentally friendly construction materials.
The new roof is expected to cost less than $1,000 per square foot, and it will be installed in 2019, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday.
The city said the construction materials are recycled and made from sustainable, non-toxic materials.
The roof will be used by the city’s largest nonprofit organization, the Community Action Council, and other civic and charitable groups.
The project is part of a broader effort by the City Council to reduce the number of people working in dangerous conditions and improve safety.
De Blasio says the city is investing $500 million over the next five years to reduce workplace injuries and deaths.
